Due to numerous calls & questions about this article I am going to keep it online for a while longer.
Wow, after hearing a story from a fellow professional disc jockey, I just had to check this out. I was told that there are "dj's" charging between $150.00 and $300.00 for dances.
"That's nothing new," I said, "it's that competition that keeps us all honest. New businesses have to start somewhere to get established. They have to make some money during that period to pay off the equipment they purchased."
"There's nothing to pay off," he says. "They buy the equipment online, book some shows and sometimes they even show up and do the dances. No risk to them because the equipment is paid off in as little as 1 or 2 shows."
"No way! Even online they can't buy all of the equipment they need for less than $5,000.00, bare minimum. That's just the basics, CD players, mixer, mics, amps, speakers, cases, cables and music. No lights, no phone (business line), no motor car (transportation), just like Gilligans' Island."
"Yes, they can... try $500.00! It may not be the best or even dependable, but it is possible. Go to... (site name removed to protect the innocent)... and search for DJ Equipment. Prices range from $100.00 to $1,000.00 with lights and trailer included."
"Wow! To think that I have over $40,000.00 invested. Plus 13 years of work and overhead. My annual equipment and liability insurance alone is more then they spend on equipment. I even pay more in two months on music than they may spend on the whole rig!"
I checked it out. It's true. Look for yourself. Am I saying that all less expensive DJs are bad? NO. Just be careful and check references. Happy hunting and may all of your parties last forever!
